schoolworks (now called scienceworks)

At Science Projects (London) I took an idea for table-top science resources for schools developed initially by a predecessor, and set out a vision for large-scale expansion.

The first step was to develop links with Primary Science Processes and Concept Exploration (SPACE) project, a classroom-based research project by King’s College London and Liverpool University. SPACE aimed to establish the ideas that primary school children hold in particular science concept areas, and the possibility of children modifying their ideas as the result of relevant experiences.

From this I developed a model for the service in terms of the pedagogy and education support which in turn also informed the design of the resources and the published materials were helpful to teachers in class.

I then raised funding for the development and roll-out, securing major grants from the Cabinet Office, Nuffield Foundation, Esso and others.

The detailed design of a system for the resources was undertaken, sourcing materials and production methods to reduce cost of manufacture. A suite of highly portable, exhibitions was developed, each with 11 individual interactives based on a particular topic and based on the SPACE principles. Some 70 different experiences were created.

The service was  prepared for launch in the Greater London area, with delivery and booking arrangements being developed and marketing materials produced. A series of meetings and CPD events took place around London.  The service was fully booked from day one, and reached 300,000 pupils per year.

Subsequent arrangements for satellite operations were set up with SATROs in Manchester and Scotland, which also operated successfully.
